Srinagar, Jan 25 (KNO): As part of the “unique celebration” of National Voters' Day, Srinagar witnessed a different sight on Dal Lake, with a special boat race flagged off by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar and the officers to promote the importance of voting.
The race brought excitement to the beautiful waters of Dal Lake, with students, locals, and officials participating in the celebrations.
While taking the voter’s pledge with students, DC Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) highlighted the need for greater voter participation, especially among the youth.
“The target and focus should be young voters, and they should be made to understand how voting is important. Every single vote matters and can bring change. It’s crucial that we encourage young people to become active participants in democracy,” he said.
Similarly, the boat race added an offbeat charm to the occasion. “The boat race through the lake drew cheers from pedestrians and locals, who praised the creative approach to spreading voter awareness.”
“This is something different. Using Dal Lake to send a message about voting is a wonderful and unique idea. It connects with people on a personal level,” said Riyaz Ahmad, a local who stopped to watch the race.
Meanwhile, for many other participants, the event was more than just a celebration. “This is my first time taking part, as I will soon be eligible to vote, and it feels special,” said another local student who attended the event.
Notably, the celebrations concluded with calls for strengthening voter awareness campaigns, with a focus on first-time voters in the region—(KNO)
